Brazil

We manage VIABAHIA, one of the main concessions in the Brazilian state of Bahia, Brazil’s second most popular tourist destination after Río de Janeiro, and an important commercial port.

We connect the state north to south through 681 kilometres of roads, divided between BR-116 and BR-324, two key transport arteries that communicate the main population centres of the state.

PROJECTS

  • BR-116: FEIRA DE SANTANA – FRONTERA CON MINAS GERAIS

The BR-116 road forms a freight transport route which crosses the country from Fortaleza to the opposite border parallel to the Atlantic coast with Uruguay. In 2012, this highway’s financing was closed with Brazil's National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

  • BR-324: SALVADOR – FEIRA DE SANTANA

The BR-324 highway connects the cities of Salvador de Bahía and Feira de Santana. In 2012, this highway’s financing was closed with Brazil's National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

    • After the pandemic was mitigated thanks to widespread vaccination, 2022 can be regarded as the year when activities got back to normal, and also as a year of maturity and increased safety thanks to the efforts of the entire team, especially in the area of operations.

During the year, a total of R$ 2,099,120 was invested in recovery, paving and lighting works, containment structures, protective and safety systems, etc., to improve conditions on the road.

In keeping with our commitment to comply with the current concession agreement and the decision taken by the High Court of Justice, we are launching the fifth-year revision process with the aim of coming to an agreement with the regulatory body. This will enable us to further increase our investment to improve the road, and to ensure compliance with public interests and the essential user mobility and safety requirements.

VIABAHIA continues to strengthen its commitment to its employees and to the communities in which it operates through the implementation of social and environmental programmes, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

    • Private capital investment in infrastructure in Brazil continues to grow.

       image

In recent years, the sector has grown thanks to the safe and effective management of assets, which, supported by favourable economic policies, has managed to attract foreign investors.

In 2022, the Investment Partnership Programme (PPI) reported 48 projects completed, with a total investment of more than R$ 101 billion.

The main projects include the 7th round of airport concessions, which guaranteed investments of R$ 7.3 billion for Congonhas and another 14 airports, and the privatisation of Eletrobras, which will result in investments of R$ 8.7 billion in projects in the North, Northeast and Southeast regions.

    • The Brazilian Government currently has 241 projects underway through the Investment Partnership Programme (PPI), 29 of which are road projects.

Of note in this area is the Secretariat of Transport's involvement in the Río-Valadares Highway concession (BR-116/493/465/RJ/MG). The investment has reached R$ 11.3 billion over the 30-year concession period, with the prospect of generating more than 150,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The project includes 303.2 kilometres of duplication and 255.2 kilometres of additional lanes. A further 7.7 kilometres of the system's capacity have to be extended in Serra de Teresópolis (RJ) to enhance traffic safety and flow.
